Chasing my dreams like a puppy chasing her tail

Hmm, where do I start? If you know me personally, you probably know I love sports. You probably know I was a physical therapist. If you've known me long enough, you may know I taught middle school for a few years and coached the first ever Benton High School Lady Panthers Softball team. But, you probably don't know that I've dreamed of writing a book for a long, long time.

How long? I started thinking about writing during high school. My favorite English teacher often encouraged me by praising my writing skills. I was one of four who received the Who's Who in Literature award my senior year. The award did lose some of its significance when my boyfriend (now husband) received the same honor. We are still trying to figure that one out. I toyed with the idea of majoring in literature or journalism. That idea lasted about two quarters of junior college before I decided to major in physical education.

So why now? Well, I looked in the mirror one day and realized I was not getting any younger. I had what I thought was a great idea for a novel, so I got started writing. Literally, writing. I hate computers so I used a number 2 pencil and a legal pad - lots and lots of legal pads. I attended a couple of writers' conferences and learned I had no idea what I was doing. I've spent the last few years attempting to learn as much as possible about writing a novel. I feel like I have now successfully graduated from kindergarten. I'm happy so say the novel is finished. I'm currently trying to make final edits and work on getting it published. I'm almost certain I will self-publish. One thing I have learned from the writers' conferences is that even if my writing skills impressed an agent or editor, it usually takes three years to get traditionally published. Remember, I'm not getting any younger.

What type of novel have I written? I'm sure a New York Times bestseller. Please hold the applause, but it is okay to laugh. I decided to write a Christian fiction novel. I'll try to explain why I choose this avenue. To be honest, several years ago when I heard the words "Christian fiction" I only thought of those Amish books I saw on the shelves at Walmart. I'm not knocking anyone if you love those books, but I just couldn't go there. I had convinced myself books labeled Christian fiction had to be very cheesy or syrupy sweet. Then one day I actually read a book by Karen Kingsbury. Wow. Then I decided to try Francine Rivers. Wow, wow. I couldn't bring myself to read Redeeming Love because I thought it was too Amish. I know that's just stupid. I finally got the book and read it. Wow, wow, wow! I discovered Charles Martin. He may be my favorite. I have also discovered many other Christian authors who write amazing stories. Their books can deal with uncomfortable issues, but they are presented with clean language and always give credit and glory to God. I knew this was the kind of book I wanted to write.

I hope you will follow this blog. I'm thinking my next blog post will reveal a little about my novel and how I got the idea for the book over thirty years ago. Until then be kind, enjoy life, and tell the Lord thanks for another day.

I enjoyed your blog, I too wish I could get my book finished. Ha , I realize to finish- you must start. I’m glad your dad had an influence on you with your love of reading and writing. And I’m glad we are distantly related. Good luck with this next adventure.

Congratulations! It's never too late to follow your dreams and I encourage you to keep on! I look forward to reading your blog and your novel. Many years ago, I enjoyed a trilogy of fiction books by Frank Peretti - This Present Darkness, Piercing the Darkness, and Prophet. They opened my eyes to spiritual warfare that goes on around us. I will have to look up the authors you mentioned.
